Manufacturing Systems

Three systems. One standard.

Every Accumen® moulding is manufactured using one of our three proprietary systems - DecraShape® for the everyday standard (92 kg load test), fourPLUS® where impact-proof and weight-conscious historic work is the brief, and ShapeCrete® where solid lightweight concrete is the right answer. Chosen according to scale, profile complexity, exposure, and install method. Your specifier or quote will recommend the right one for your project.

01, Weight

Heritage presence without the weight penalty.

A traditionally-cast stone cornice at the scale we regularly produce would weigh several hundred kilograms per linear metre, impractical for most builds and hostile to modern wall systems. Our DecraShape® and fourPLUS® systems deliver the same visual presence at a fraction of the structural load.

Which means columns that drop into a residential build without re-engineering the portico, and cornice runs that can wrap a commercial façade without fixing penalties.

02, Finish

Finishes that hold up, here.

KickIt® plaster finish gives you a workable, paint-ready surface (apply a flexible sealer first) that sits right with New Zealand's weather extremes. TidyUp® adhesive delivers consistent seams that don't telegraph through the paint line twelve months on.

Both are our proprietary systems, developed specifically for the profiles we make, not off-the-shelf compounds repackaged under our name.

03, Custom

If it isn't in the catalogue, we'll make it.

Roughly a third of what we produce every year is bespoke, either a heritage-match to an existing damaged profile, or an architect-drawn detail that doesn't exist anywhere in stock. Send us a photograph, a drawing, or a fragment. We'll quote the piece.

01, Pipe Sections

Consistent fit. Clean seams. Reliable performance.

Pre-formed pipe sections are our largest category and the one we've spent the longest perfecting. From phenolic for the chilled lines where thermal value matters most, to Rockwool where fire performance is the spec driver, to fibreglass for the high-volume commercial installs, every section ships sized, cut, and documented.

Mechanical contractors and plumbers who've been specifying Accumen® pipe insulation for a decade keep coming back for the same reasons: the sections fit, the seams dress cleanly, and the technical backup is there when the spec gets challenged.

Documentation that passes review.

Every Accumen® insulation product ships with the technical data a specifier or council consent reviewer needs: thermal values tested to published standards, fire classifications under NZBC C/AS1 and C/AS2, service temperature ranges, and full BPIR documentation where relevant.

Accumen® is a New Zealand specialist in two disciplines that, on the surface, have almost nothing in common, architectural mouldings and high-performance thermal insulation. What they share is a single operating standard, a small team who've been doing this for decades, and a belief that how a thing is made matters.

Act 01 · Origin

It started with a single profile.

Accumen® was founded in 1991 by a craftsman who couldn't get the mouldings he wanted for a restoration project. Rather than compromise on the specification, he made them himself, and then made them for the next project, and the project after that.

Accumen® is a trusted name in New Zealand's construction and building materials landscape, with a market presence spanning over 35 years. We have earned a reputation for reliability, innovation, and a "can-do" approach that consistently delivers value across residential, commercial, and specialist construction sectors.

Thirty-five years later, Accumen® still operates from Penrose, Auckland, still makes work by hand, and still takes on the commissions nobody else will touch.

Accumen® founded

Small workshop in Auckland. First commission: architectural mouldings for a heritage restoration project.

Lightweight moulding systems developed

In-house lightweight moulding systems developed (DecraShape®, fourPLUS® and ShapeCrete®), covering exterior-grade composite and cast-concrete work for commissions impractical with traditional cast-stone methods.

2014

New ownership

Josh Mainwaring purchases Accumen®, taking over as owner and Chief Executive.

Hot Edge manufacturing begins

Accumen® begins manufacturing the Firth® Hot Edge slab-edge insulation system for RibRaft® foundations.

2016

Insulation division established

Second specialist division established, pipe insulation and thermal systems for commercial and industrial construction. Accumen acquired the former Forman Manufacturing operation, continuing its manufacturing in New Zealand.

Owens Corning Foamular® distribution

Appointed to distribute Owens Corning Foamular® extruded polystyrene (XPS) across New Zealand.

Once the outside cladding is up and the wall areas have been made weather tight.

A tradesperson will be required to install, plaster or mesh and plaster any joins, and patch up any holes that may have occurred when using mechanical fixings to help hold the columns and details in place, in conjunction with adhesive plaster.

We are able to provide you with details of plastering companies who are proficient in installing decorative products manufactured by Accumen® Shapes Ltd. For overseas customers we will provide installation details on a project by project basis.

Yes we can, but the most economical way to purchase mouldings is in 2.7 metre lengths. Due to the size of window or door openings often being a lesser length, it is often practical to order up the lengths in sizes to suit the opening (to cut down on joints).

We provide the following plaster finishes:

Our stock range and most of our mouldings are made with a trowel sponge finish which blends in well with most exterior surfaces. However, we are able to provide other types of finishes on our mouldings when required.

Yes, we export product to a number of overseas destinations.

Yes, if you supply us with the overall length of the sills including adding on the return mitre either side of the opening. If there is an architrave either side, remember to include this measurement in the overall length. We will then supply the sills made to length with the return mitres on each end ready for installation.

Accumen® Shapes decorative mouldings and details can be fixed to most types of wall material including solid plaster, brickwork, concrete, concrete block, AAC panel, cement board, plywood, wood and most other known wall material.

Expansion joints should be discussed per project. Decorative mouldings that go around a building are not safety belts. All buildings move. Extra expansion joints are recommended and should be considered.

We strongly recommend that informed and competent tradespersons install the decorative mouldings and details. This may include but is not limited to the following:

Using a recommended adhesive (e.g. TidyUp® adhesive plaster, supplied by Accumen® Shapes Limited)

Use of stainless steel mechanical fixings

Meshing and plastering joins

Using expansion joints

Sealing the decorative mouldings and details to the building

Making the fixed decorative mouldings and details weather tight

Simply ask us to remove an angled section of the cornice that is going into the corner. This will give you the ability to roll the cornice as you install it, to help alleviate possible gaps on the wall or eave.

LRV is a measurement that tells you how much light a colour reflects, and conversely how much it absorbs. LRV runs on a scale from 0% to 100%. Zero is absolute black; 100% is a perfectly reflective white. Dark colours with low LRV tend to reflect little light while absorbing lots of heat energy, whereas light colours with high LRV reflect a lot of light and absorb less heat energy.

The LRV of the paint colour that is to be applied over decorative details must be as per the specification of the plaster system or cladding company.

Once mouldings are installed correctly, and the adhesive, touch-ups, and joins have been made good and dried, they must be either painted or recoated in a specifically designed plaster as soon as possible.

If painted, Accumen® Shapes Ltd recommend two coats of flexible sealer and two coats of flexible paint. The preparation and application of any paint going on to the moulding should follow the same instructions a paint company would give for applying any sealer and paint on to a raw concrete or plastered wall.

The LRV (Light Reflectance Value) of the paint colour must be as per the specification of the plaster system or cladding company.

Any accumulation of dirt or similar that may occur should be regularly removed from the external surface by cleaning with warm water and detergent and a soft broom. Solvent-based cleaners should not be used.

Like any standard cladding system, the moulding should be checked annually for damage and possible water entry. Any damage which may have occurred must be repaired using professional trade practice. Any paint film damage must be repaired as soon as possible.

It will be necessary to repaint the building in accordance with the paint manufacturer's instructions at certain intervals. The paint manufacturing company should be contacted to confirm the life expectancy of the paint system.

Decorative mouldings may be water-repellent in themselves, but due to the diverse situations they may be used in, they are not to be used as a weather-tight material. Architects and competent tradespersons must follow professional trade specifications for the application of a weather-tight membrane on the building before fixing Accumen® Shapes Ltd decorative products. We strongly recommend that informed and competent tradespersons fix the mouldings and shapes.

Installation methods should be clearly understood before installing decorative products manufactured by Accumen® Shapes Ltd.

Construction using Accumen® Shapes Ltd products must be in accordance with good building practice, the New Zealand Building Code, and all statutory and relevant New Zealand standards.

When running shapes horizontally, we recommend a minimum 15° fall on the top of the moulding to shed water. This is a small detail that materially extends the service life of an exterior band.

Columns from heritage to contemporary.

Columns can be used internally or externally. They can be round or square (pillar), smooth or fluted, tapered or straight. They are usually supplied in standard lengths of 2700 mm but can easily be cut to suit your individual requirements.

Columns are supplied in halves with a centre cut-out for the support post and, where required, downpipes or electrical wiring. The shaft is made in DecraShape® or fourPLUS® depending on application.

Examples of some of the more popular column shapes Accumen® Shapes has manufactured include classical Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian profiles. Our 2025 restoration of the Old Choral Hall replicated 1,500+ components to the 1872 original.

Capitals, pedestals, plinths and bases can be mixed and matched to suit your project. The most common Capital, C18, is held in stock in diameters of 200 mm, 250 mm, 300 mm and 350 mm. All our plinths and pedestals are made from ShapeCrete® lightweight concrete.

Accumen® Cornices are decorative finishing elements installed beneath the eaves of a roof, creating a refined transition between wall and roofline. They add depth, character, and architectural presence to facades.

A wide variety of custom profiles are available beyond the standard in-stock range. In-stock cornice shapes are viewable in the Stock Mouldings section, and bespoke profiles can be cast in DecraShape®, fourPLUS®, or ShapeCrete® depending on application.

A system built to hold detail.

DecraShape® was developed in our workshop to solve a specific problem: how to reproduce the profile density of Victorian and Edwardian interior work without the weight, cost, or brittleness of traditional plaster casting.

The material is lightweight, dimensionally stable, and takes fine detail. A DecraShape® cornice can carry seven or eight distinct profile elements, dentil bands, cyma curves, beads, fillets, without the compound weight that makes heritage plaster installs so hard on timber ceilings.

Each length ships plaster-finished and ready for sealing. Apply a flexible sealer then a flexible trade paint - works equally well for interior and exterior runs. Joints are finished with our proprietary TidyUp® adhesive for clean, invisible seams.

Classical detail with material weight.

Dentils are small, evenly spaced blocks used as decorative elements on cornice mouldings. Their name comes from the Latin dens, meaning "tooth," and they create the appearance of a row of teeth along the edge of a structure. Common in classical and neoclassical architecture, dentils add rhythm, detail, and elegance to cornices.

Common uses for dentils: enhancing cornice mouldings on homes and buildings, adding ornamental detail to gables, eaves, and rooflines.

Corbels are projecting architectural brackets that support - or appear to support - a structural element such as a beam, shelf, or cornice. Traditionally carved from wood or stone, corbels serve both structural and decorative purposes.

Exterior corbels are often featured beneath eaves, large cornices, or window sills, adding visual interest and a sense of craftsmanship. All our dentil and corbel work is produced in ShapeCrete®, the cast-finish system that gives this detail the weight, depth, and material authenticity it needs.

Built for what the weather does.

fourPLUS® was developed to replace the traditional exterior-moulding solutions, cast stone, timber, or heavy plaster, that either cost too much, weigh too much, or don't last. The composite structure is specifically engineered for New Zealand and Australian climate conditions.

The material is UV-stable and resists the dimensional movement that plagues timber mouldings exposed to sun. It doesn't absorb water the way plaster does, so freeze-thaw and salt-spray degradation are effectively eliminated. And it's light enough that fixing detail doesn't need to over-engineer for dead load.

Accumen® letterbox pillars - pyramid and sloped cap

Pre-plastered, ready to set.

Accumen® manufactures pre-plastered letterbox pillars, available with either a contemporary sloped top or a traditional pyramid-style cap.

The pillar body is constructed using fourPLUS®, while the pyramid cap is made from ShapeCrete®. Letterbox pillars are supplied unpainted (painting and sealing to be completed by others) and come with a standard cut-out size of 240 mm wide by 175 mm high, designed to accommodate your choice of letterbox insert.

Telescopic letterbox inserts are readily available from leading building hardware suppliers. Once an insert is selected, it is important to confirm that the cut-out size fits within our standard dimensions. We also offer the option to alter the cut-out size to suit your specific insert, if needed.

Installation of the metal letterbox insert is a straightforward process, typically manageable by a home handyman or builder. The pillar is covered by Accumen's warranty on factory workmanship — contact us for warranty details. The warranty for the letterbox insert itself is provided by the insert supplier.

The material matters.

ShapeCrete® is Accumen®'s cast concrete system. It's not the right system for every project, the weight and install complexity rule it out for most residential work, but when a commission calls for it, nothing else does the job.

The reason to specify ShapeCrete® is that cast concrete reads as cast concrete. On a heritage restoration where the original material was cast stone, or on a commercial façade where the architectural vocabulary is weight and permanence, a lightweight substitute would be visually wrong even if dimensionally correct.

Every commission is made to order. We work from the sample or drawing, mould the profile in our workshop, and deliver crated and ready for install with lifting and fixing details supplied with every piece.

Three boards in one.

AccuThermax™ Insulated Plasterboard is a high-performance insulated lining panel that combines a 10 mm GIB® paper-faced plasterboard lining with a rigid AccuThermax™ Phenolic Foam Board core, factory-laminated as a single board.

The continuous foil layer at the plasterboard-to-phenolic interface provides a full vapour barrier and a reflective face. The Resolution® core is certified to EN 13166 by OFI (cert. no. 1085, ILAC-accredited) - acceptable evidence under AS/NZS 4859.1:2018.

Available in 11 standard thicknesses from 35 mm to 100 mm overall (including the 10 mm plasterboard face), with declared R-values from R1.10 up to R4.05. Custom thicknesses by MOQ.

High-performance rigid phenolic insulation core, λ = 0.023 W/m·K at 15 °C. Among the lowest thermal conductivity values available in a board format at this thickness range.

Accumen® Preformed Pipe Sections are manufactured from non-combustible glass fibres bonded with a thermosetting resin into cylindrical insulation sections. A slit along one wall allows the pipe section to be opened and installed over the pipe.

These are highly efficient thermal insulation products for use on pipes operating in the temperature range 2 °C to 450 °C - chilled water, hot water, steam, refrigeration and industrial process lines.

Why Phenolic

Every insulation foam makes a trade-off. EPS is cheap but burns. PIR insulates well but smokes. Rubber is flexible but thick. Phenolic foam doesn't trade — it pairs the best thermal performance in the category with outstanding fire behaviour, a >95% closed-cell structure that blocks moisture, and a service range that runs from cryogenic to hot water.

That's why it's the standard specification in the UK and Hong Kong, and insulates landmarks from the Burj Khalifa to the Channel Tunnel. Now it's made here.

Wet insulation barely insulates — and condensation under the jacket is what corrodes pipework. Phenolic's >95% closed-cell structure, sealed behind a factory-applied foil vapour barrier, stops moisture migration and internal condensation cold.

This product is among the most thermally efficient in its class - ideal for chilled-water, dual-temperature, refrigeration and HVAC pipework where high R-value, low thickness and a continuous vapour barrier matter.

Manufactured to AS/NZS 4859.1 (testing via ASTM C518). IDs from 6.35 mm to 610 mm - custom sizes available. Available in 500 mm and 1000 mm lengths, with eleven standard wall thicknesses from 20 mm to 100 mm.

AccuThermax™ Phenolic PPS at 80 kg/m³ density is a closed-cell, fibre-free phenolic foam pipe insulation, supplied as preformed pipe sections for nominal bores or as curved segments for larger-diameter industrial pipework — foil-faced as standard, or plain/unfaced on request.

The high-density grade delivers excellent thermal performance at minimal thickness with substantially enhanced compressive strength and mechanical durability over the standard 40 kg/m³ product — suited to higher-load support points, traffic-exposed runs and demanding industrial pipework.

It contains no added chlorides or halogenated fire retardants — suitable for stainless steel pipework subject to service conditions and system design. AccuThermax™ Phenolic PPS at 120 kg/m³ density is a closed-cell, fibre-free phenolic foam pipe insulation supplied as preformed pipe sections, curved segments, preformed elbows and pipe support blocks and hanger inserts — foil-faced as standard, or plain/unfaced on request.

It is the load-bearing grade of the range: 850 ± 50 kPa compressive strength perpendicular to rise allows it to carry pipe loads directly at supports, replacing the thermal bridge created by bare cradles, clamps and hangers while maintaining insulation and vapour-barrier continuity.

It contains no added chlorides or halogenated fire retardants — suitable for stainless steel pipework subject to service conditions and system design. Services include chilled water, heating, refrigeration, low-temperature process and cryogenics, −180 °C to +120 °C.

AccuThermax™ Phenolic Board is a closed-cell rigid phenolic foam board (Resolution® phenolic core) offering an exceptional combination of compressive strength, low thermal conductivity and strong fire performance — supplied plain (unfaced) or foil-faced, at nominal densities of 40, 80 and 120 kg/m³.

Its high strength-to-weight ratio and dimensional stability make it well suited to load-bearing thermal insulation duties where conventional low-density insulants are unsuitable. The 40 kg/m³ grade is the general-purpose board of the range; the 80 kg/m³ grade remains lighter and easier to work than the 120 kg/m³ grade; the 120 grade carries the highest compressive loading.

Typical applications: tapered crickets, saddles and sumps beneath waterproofing membranes on flat and low-slope roofs; support and packer boards for rooftop plant, plinths and upstands; load-bearing insulation inserts and support blocks for pipework and equipment; rigid building insulation to framed walls, ceiling (soffit) linings and roofing (40 grade); and general thermal insulation where compressive loading or service temperatures up to 120 °C apply.

Nominal 40, 80 ± 4 and 120 ± 7 kg/m³ (ASTM D1622). The 40 grade is the general-purpose board; 80 is lighter and easier to work; 120 carries the highest loads.

AccuThermax™ Stonewool PPS is a rigid, non-combustible preformed pipe section made from natural basalt and dolomite rock (stone) wool bonded with a heat-cured thermosetting resin, at a nominal density of 110 kg/m³. Sections are cut in New Zealand by Accumen Shapes Ltd from imported low-chloride rock wool block and supplied slit along one wall so they open and fit straight over the pipe.

Available foil-faced (reinforced aluminium-foil vapour facing), plain (unfaced), or as curved segments for large-diameter pipework and vessels. It is water-repellent, asbestos-free and very low chloride (6 ppm, ASTM C871), suited to service from ambient up to a hot-face of approximately 650 °C — steam, condensate, thermal-oil, exhaust and hot-water pipework across industrial process, power-generation and commercial building services.

AccuThermax™ Stonewool Blanket — rolls of flexible mineral wool blanket

Flexible stone wool for large plant & process.

AccuThermax™ Stonewool Blanket is a flexible, non-combustible insulation blanket spun from natural basalt and dolomite mineral wool fibres and bonded with a heat-cured thermosetting resin. It is supplied in three forms — plain blanket, aluminium-foil-faced blanket, and wired mat with galvanised or stainless steel wire mesh.

It suits the thermal and acoustic insulation of large-diameter pipework, vessels, tanks, silos, boilers, ducts and other industrial and commercial process equipment operating at elevated temperatures. The blanket is water-repellent, pH-neutral to slightly alkaline, asbestos-free, and supplied as a low-chloride grade conforming with ASTM C795 / C871 for use over austenitic stainless steel.

Wired mat (with stainless mesh) is the preferred form for high-temperature pipework subject to mechanical loads, vibration or external cladding; foil-faced product gives a clean vapour-retarding surface; plain blanket is typically used as a core layer beneath cladding or finishing systems.

The slab edge of a foundation can be responsible for approximately 80% of the slab's total heat loss. Further research shows that thermal resistance does not significantly improve by fully extending insulation under the slab - the critical detail is at the slab edge.

The "secret sauce" for moulding install.

TidyUp® is Accumen®'s own uniquely modified cement-based adhesive plaster that is recommended for use by tradespersons for installing Accumen® mouldings and shapes.

TidyUp® adhesive plaster is designed for fixing decorative mouldings to a weathertight surface using a notched trowel. We supply TidyUp® in convenient 4 L or 10 L resealable buckets, for ease of storage and carrying around difficult building sites.

Decorative mouldings may be water repellent in themselves, but due to the diverse situations they may be used in, they are not to be used as a weathertight material. Architects and competent tradespersons must follow professional trade specifications for the application of a weathertight membrane on the building before fixing Accumen® decorative products.

We strongly recommend that informed and competent installers fix the mouldings and shapes. Installation methods should be clearly understood before installing decorative products. Accumen® can recommend professional plasterers throughout New Zealand who are available to assist you with installation.

We supplied the full façade moulding set in fourPLUS® - UV-stable, dimensionally tight under lakeside exposure, plaster-finished and ready for sealing + the brand paint spec. Delivery was sequenced against the cladding programme so nothing sat on site and no trade above was held up.

The brief.

Stanbeth House on Auckland's Customs Street is late-1800s commercial architecture with nine ground-level arches. The restoration brief was to reproduce all nine column capitals and all nine arch keystones - and they had to read as a single matched set.

Our approach.

On paper that's nine of one thing. In practice each arch sits in a slightly different structural context - corner arches carry more lateral load, the centre arch has additional dead load. We supplied each capital and keystone in ShapeCrete® with embedded stainless fixing points engineered per-arch to match the underlying load path.

Outcome.

The arches now read as a matched set from the footpath. Look closely at the keystone fixings and each one has its own anchor pattern - invisible, but right for that arch's load. Stanbeth is back in tenancy with the original architectural language intact.

We CAD-modelled the cup geometry from official references, 3D-machined the form against the steel substrate, and finished to a display-grade surface in a fraction of the turnaround a traditional moulding would have required. Engineering speed met sculptural accuracy.

Outcome.

The replica is dimensionally faithful, structurally sound, and was on display when the brief required it - not later. 3D machining of EPS substrate is one of the genuinely transformative recent capabilities in architectural shape work.

The AccuThermax™ Phenolic range has long been the high-performance answer for mechanical services where space is tight and thermal demand is uncompromising. We're now producing the range locally - short lead time, full NZ-side technical support, full BPIR pack.

The verified detail.

The verified headline facts (per the Resolution® specification): 40 kg/m³ density phenolic foam, factory-faced with aluminium foil vapour barrier. Testing in compliance with AS/NZS 4859.1 via ASTM C518. Operating temperature range: −180 °C through +120 °C - covering chilled water, cold water, domestic hot water, and medium-pressure hot water (to 120 °C).

Formats and supply.

Preformed half pipe sections supplied in 500 mm or 1000 mm lengths, with eleven standard wall thicknesses from 20 mm through 100 mm and IDs from 6.35 mm to 610 mm. Special high-density grades are available for pipe-support applications where the thermal break needs to carry load. Locally manufactured means the spec doesn't sit behind a shipping schedule - custom sizes are available on 09 270 9228.

The brief.

T Adair in Gisborne suffered damage from the 2007 earthquake and subsequent fire - a historic building that required expert restoration to bring it back. Plastering and the installation of lightweight concrete mouldings would carry the architectural work.

Our approach.

We supplied ShapeCrete® lightweight concrete mouldings designed against the surviving original profile language, plus DecraShape® feature detail for the interior. Every component registered against the building's reconstructed envelope for invisible joinery.

Outcome.

T Adair stands restored as a survivor of one of New Zealand's most disruptive recent events - earthquake-damaged then fire-damaged, now back as the Gisborne heritage building it always was. Restoration done with the care the building deserved.

The brief.

Our approach.

We sample-matched each damaged component against the surviving original profile language and reproduced in fourPLUS® for the exterior architectural runs, ShapeCrete® for the heavier cast-stone elements. Every replacement piece registered against the surviving original for invisible repair.

Outcome.

Thomas Green in Gore now stands as the architectural restoration the building deserved - original architectural elements reproduced, original character preserved, modern structural compliance underwritten. Heritage restoration at the regional architectural level.

The brief.

When the University of Auckland decided to reinstate the original Old Choral Hall portico, the brief was unambiguous: every profile, every dentil, every cornice run had to read as the 19th-century original. Drawings alone weren't going to get us there - this needed measurement-first restoration.

Our approach.

Working with Architectus, Aspect Construction and Allied Exteriors, we approached the job as a measurement problem first. Surviving fragments were 3D-scanned where possible; where they didn't exist, geometry was inferred from historical photographs and matched to typological patterns. Over 1,500 individual components were produced.

Outcome.

The result is a portico that reads as if it had never left. From the street, you wouldn't know which dentils are 1870s and which are 2026. That's the point - and the technical achievement underneath: 3D scanning, 3D printing for proof, precision moulding for the final delivery.

The brief.

Twenty-two columns, each 8.0 metres tall and 800 mm in diameter, delivered to Hoyts Chadstone in Melbourne. Over 400 individual stack-line components produced in New Zealand and shipped across the Tasman in sequence for install.

Our approach.

Columns at this scale don't ship as single pieces. The Hoyts run was split into stack-line sections, designed so that the joint detail disappears once the fourPLUS® coating is applied with the signature smooth finish. We ran a full test stack in Penrose before shipping a single component.

Outcome.

Twenty-two columns up, on time, in another country. By the time the first crate left the wharf, the install sequence was a known quantity, and the on-site team had a stack-up they could replicate without surprise. The kind of brief we built fourPLUS® for.

The brief.

Tantalus Estate on Waiheke Island wanted to keep its character - a historic building with a distinctive bell tower and a parapet line that defined the vineyard's silhouette against the Hauraki Gulf. The original tower was structurally compromised and the parapet was failing.

Our approach.

Replacing the tower in original-weight stone was off the table on a vineyard site with restricted access. We rebuilt the bell tower in ShapeCrete® for the lower mass and DecraShape® for the upper detailing - visually indistinguishable from the cast-stone original, but a fraction of the structural load. The new parapet went in fourPLUS® for the coastal exposure spec.

Outcome.

From the cellar door across the vines, the new tower reads as it always did. Every piece arrived in transport-friendly sections, registered against the existing footprint within a few millimetres, and went up in days rather than weeks. Heritage hospitality done with the architectural respect the building deserved.

Restoration of three intricately detailed masonry chimneys from the late 1800s at one of Auckland's oldest homes. The original chimneys, each weighing approximately 2 tonnes, were decommissioned due to seismic safety concerns and replaced with lightweight replicas using polystyrene and fibreglass-reinforced plaster - reducing weight to just under 200 kg each while maintaining exact architectural detail.

The brief.

Roselle House, on the grounds of St Kentigern Boys' School, is one of the oldest homes in Auckland. The three original chimneys, each weighing approximately two tonnes, had reached the point where seismic concern outweighed sentiment. They had to come down.

Our approach.

Working with Salmond Reed Architects, we produced lightweight replicas in polystyrene and fibreglass-reinforced plaster. Each chimney was reproduced in exacting detail from photographs and surviving profile fragments, then finished and weighted to read identically to the masonry it replaced. Final weight per chimney: just under 200 kg, down from two tonnes.

Outcome.

The difference is invisible from the ground. Up close, the detail matches: cornice profiles, base plinth, cap geometry. The change is the load on the structure below, which is now an order of magnitude safer in seismic terms without compromising the heritage character of the building.

Restoration of the historic Union Fish Building in Auckland, preserving early 20th-century architectural elements and enhancing its original exterior features. The building, constructed in 1904-1906 and located at 116-118 Quay Street, is registered as Category I under the Historic Places Act (1993). The Union Fish Building at 116-118 Quay Street, Auckland - constructed 1904-1906, Heritage NZ registered - required restoration of its early-20th-century architectural elements and an enhanced reading of its original exterior features.

Our approach.

We sample-matched the surviving original profile language and reproduced in ShapeCrete® for the cast-stone passages and fourPLUS® for the exterior runs. Every component registered against the existing 1906 architecture for invisible joinery and continuous architectural reading.

Outcome.

The Union Fish Building now reads as it did in 1906, with the modern structural compliance and heritage registration responsibilities underwritten. Quay Street's architectural character preserved, one building at a time.

The project

This luxury home in the Auckland suburb of Ōrākei encompassed a large selection of Accumen® Shapes exterior moulding products to create this Italian-inspired masterpiece.

Our approach

Given the detailed nature of this project, Accumen® Shapes were engaged by Jones Architects Ltd early on in the project to bring the homeowner's vision to life alongside Lewis Build (Builders) and Allied Exteriors (Plasterers / Mouldings Installers).

The project utilised a number of Accumen® Shapes exterior moulding products including arches, dentils and corbels, columns, cornices, fence caps, and balusters for balustrades.

The work

This project required a high level of customisation: the mouldings needed to be lightweight, yet look solid and dramatic. The balusters for the balustrades in particular have been designed to replicate solid concrete - they are lightweight mouldings installed over an engineered steel structure.

The project

The Arches apartment building in Mission Bay is unique in more ways than one. Accumen® Shapes are proud to have supplied the decorative moulding details for this project.

The facade

The aesthetic expression of the facade amongst its neighbours is pleasantly unique: centring coastal cues, the building captures a sculptural quality and an appreciation of traditionally inspired forms.

The dazzling white exterior complements the seaside environment, and the curved archways and custom-made moulding details portray a calming yet sophisticated energy.

The brief

A contemporary Art Deco composition on Great North Road, BurgerFuel's headquarters as an architectural statement, not just commercial premises. The façade language: stepped parapet, winged insignia, twin oculi, and a disciplined grid of recessed panels.

Art Deco is one of those vocabularies that's easy to gesture at and hard to deliver. The proportional language is unforgiving, get the panel grid wrong, get the stepping wrong, get the oculus framing wrong, and the whole façade reads as pastiche. The spec demanded mouldings work that carried the proportional discipline of authentic Art Deco.

Our approach

Accumen® supplied the full suite of DecraShape® and fourPLUS® mouldings that give the façade its form and character, every recessed panel frame, every stepped parapet section, every band that organises the composition.

Production disciplines around the Art Deco grid were tight. Every recessed panel had to align with neighbours along both axes. The stepped parapet sections had to read cleanly against each other at the top of the façade. The twin oculi had to frame correctly against the parapet stepping above them.

Delivered to tight deadlines and exacting measurements. The result demonstrates that Accumen®'s moulding systems suit modern commercial expression as readily as heritage restoration, Art Deco isn't heritage, it's contemporary architectural language with deep proportional rules.

Outcome

The BurgerFuel HQ has become a recognisable architectural moment on Great North Road, a building where the brand and the architecture reinforce each other. The illuminated insignia at night, framed by the stepped parapet, is the project's signature image.

The project sits in the portfolio as evidence that Accumen®'s systems deliver well outside the heritage residential context that's most associated with classical mouldings work.

The brief

A majestic old building restored to its former glory. The Quay Building is a five-storey heritage commercial façade in the heart of Britomart, keystoned arches at ground level, pilaster capitals through the middle floors, full classical cornice at the top, and a base course running the length of the elevation.

Five distinct moulding profiles needed replication across the façade. The architectural specification called for visual fidelity to the original, modern composite substitutes that read as fakery weren't acceptable.

Our approach

Accumen® replicated the majority of the building's decorative mouldings, five distinct profiles spanning keystoned arches, pilaster capitals, cornices, and base details, to bring the façade back to life.

Each profile was developed from surviving fragments and from period photographic record. Where original elements still existed, they served as the master for replication; where they didn't, the architect's drawings and historical reference filled the gap. Every profile went through workshop sign-off before committing to full production.

Delivered alongside Cheshire Architects, Bracewell Construction for site management, and Andrew Plastering for the skilful installation of the decorative details. The plastering trade integration was particularly important, five distinct profiles installed across five storeys means the rhythm and alignment between trade scopes is everything.

Outcome

The Quay Building was returned to its former glory in 2014, a captivating commercial façade in the centre of Britomart, restored to a standard that won't date.

The project demonstrates Accumen®'s collaborative trade integration with leading NZ architects on serious heritage work. Cheshire Architects, Bracewell Construction, and Andrew Plastering all on a single restoration is the kind of team you build heritage projects with, not a generic supply chain.
